The newest entree to the Jackson food scene opened on Valentine’s Day in Downtown Jackson. Sugar Ray’s Sweet Shop is located across Capitol Street from The King Edward Hotel and features candy and sweets that will satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth. It’s nestled inside the former Cohen Brothers Suit Store. Their marketing manager Elizabeth Augustine jokes that it went from “Suit Shop to Sweet Shop.”
Sugar Ray’s offers handmade chocolates, candies, gummies, and jelly beans. They even have an “old school” section with sodas, moon pies and other treats that those of us who sport a few grey hairs will remember. Have you ever wondered where you can still find candy cigarettes? Sugar Ray’s has them!
Sugar Ray’s is the first venture for J & J Hospitality, but there are plans for the rest of the building which is currently being renovated.
The scene inside Sugar Ray’s is astounding. The beautiful aesthetics will remind you of a simpler time. Designed by Jackson native Mary Sanders Ferriss and Ian Hanson, this throwback store does not disappoint. Seriously. Brides are already taking pictures in the beautiful setting.
The Sweet Treats
On to the candy!
I have literally never seen some of the more obscure options found inside Sugar Ray’s. I know I’m not the only one who will offer to taste test Mimosa Truffles!? Other options that are clearly for the adults include Margarita Cordials, Rum Cordials, Dark Chocolate and Bourbon Cordials and Champagne flavored jelly beans.
For those of you who don’t enjoy such things, they even have Sweet Tea Lollipops! My kids loved the Chocolate Meltaways and Gummy Frogs. I bet yours will, too!
One of the more strikingly beautiful items I saw was their candied apples. The bubblegum and tangerine flavors looked like something out of the props section of a 1950’s movie. There are plans to feature more baked goods in the near future as well.
Sugar Ray’s will be working with other local businesses to host special events throughout the year, so stay tuned for announcements in that regard. They also serve the locally roasted Bean Fruit Coffee in a French press as well as Mississippi Cold Drip, an Eat Jackson favorite.
Shop at Sugar Ray’s sweet shop for one of the more unique food adventures in Jackson — you won’t regret it! Sugar Ray’s is located at 224 Capitol Street in Downtown Jackson. You can reach them by phone at 601.955.2916.
