Shapley’s: The Metro’s Best Steak!
Living in the Jackson area can spoil a person. The number of great, locally owned restaurants far exceeds most cities of comparable size. New chefs and new concepts seem to come into the market each year and add to the reputation the area has cultivated as a hidden gem for foodies.
While all the new restaurants are fun and exciting, there are a few places that will always hold a special place in both my heart and in the culinary history of the area. Shapley’s is one of those places.
It seems like each year a new place vies for affections in an effort to be the metro area’s favorite steak, but as was proven in our recent Eat Madness: Steak Edition bracket, we locals just keep coming back to Shapley’s.
After thousands of votes, Shapley’s won round after round of head to head competition, conquering the bracket and winning the champion’s title for Best Steak in the Jackson Metro!
Shapley’s opened in 1985, and they immediately set the gold standard for steaks in our local market. Mark Shapley was the original owner, and his personal touch with each table made the experience great.
In 1998, Mark sold the business to Scott and Julie Koestler, who still own and operate Shapley’s today. At the time of the purchase, Scott had graduated from running the kitchen at the fabled steakhouse to being the General Manager, so he knew the business inside and out.
Immediately some customers lamented the lack of Mark’s jovial presence in the dining room, but the Koestler’s had a larger vision for what Shapley’s could become. And they did it. They took a great steakhouse and transformed it into a great restaurant.
Scott focused his talents on the kitchen. He flew in fresh fish and made sure that each experience at Shapley’s was centered around quality food coming to the table in a timely manner.
The Koestler’s also developed Jackson’s most experienced waitstaff. To complete the experience, they took their passion for wine and added a new wrinkle to the old steakhouse: the metro area’s best wine list. In 2001, Shapley’s first appeared on Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence list that comes out annually; then they leveled up. In 2003, Shapley’s became one of only a handful of Mississippi restaurants to ever receive the coveted Best Of Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator. The award is given to recognize great wine restaurants that pay attention to detail and celebrates the depth and breadth of Shapley’s amazing list. And let me assure you, this is no small feat in a state like Mississippi that requires an immense amount of red tape to buy wine at auction.
Somehow, through all of the changes, the Koestler’s never lost sight of what made Shapley’s great in the first place: the steaks. Coated in their own proprietary brand of seasonings and broiled to perfection, many of you agree that there is simply not a steak better. Shapley’s is a regional favorite, and they host out of town guests regularly who are smart enough to ask the question: “Where is the best place to get a steak in this town?”
Congratulations to Shapley’s in Ridgeland!
Well, the readers of Eat Jackson have spoken, and to be honest, it wasn’t even close. They overwhelmingly chose Shapley’s as their favorite steak in this year’s Eat Madness bracket. Those of us who grew up here have known it for over 30 years.
