I was invited down to the Old Capitol Inn in Jackson for lunch last week. Wow what a treat. I had only been there for weddings and ballroom functions which was hardly anything like the mid-day dining experience.
My guest and I were seated promptly as we opted for the outdoor dining. The view was classic and priceless, the courtyard was lovely with its blooming flowers and fountains. Our seat was under a fan, and even though the Mississippi heat was kicking, we were comfortable.
After our drink orders were taken, they brought out what had to have been one of my favorite parts of the meal. It’s dip that was an artichoke cheese and yummy all combined together. We had bread wedges that paired perfectly with the dip. I could have just eaten that appetizer for lunch, it was that good.
We settled on a couple of salads, although there was a PoBoy that really caught my eye. I was intrigued by a beef tenderloin fajita salad. The picture probably says it all, but it was delicious.
Mandarin Chicken was the selection of my guest. She wanted to try several things, but decided to go with this salad after further prompting from our server. She wasn’t disappointed. It was the lightest sweet flavor, with loads of color and textures. walnuts, celery, carrots, grapes, red onions, peppers and baby asparagus were all included in her dish. Of course I grabbed a couple of bites
with my fork so I could tell you folks about it. I’d imagine most salad lovin’ ladies in town would be more than thrilled with this salad.
My tea glass was a little smaller than at most places I’ve eaten, but with fair warning to our waitress she managed to keep up with my drinking fairly well.
Topping off the meal was a little something sent out from the chef, I guess the picture tells the story on this for the most part. It was great!
Thanks to all the folks over at the Old Capitol Inn for having us over, we really enjoyed it, and we’ll be back.
Food: Excellent. I don’t know that I’ve seen plates with that much attention to the presentation for lunch anywhere in town. Really good food, and beautiful presentation.
Service: Our server kept the meal moving and checked on us frequently. No complaints here!
Atmosphere: It’s hard to get much more atmosphere for lunch in the area. A landmark hotel & restaurant a stones throw from the State Capitol. I’d say it was a home run.
