Eight Ways to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Jackson

673

May is the month for patio dining and margarita drinking. Cinco de Mayo marks the unofficial start of the season. Who knows what we’re actually celebrating on this day other than an excuse to eat more tacos and drink more margaritas – all on a patio if the weather treats us well. Never being one to back away from such a challenge, we invite you to join us as we celebrate some of our favorite cuisine this month in honor of Cinco de Mayo.

If you are an Eat Jackson Fork and Knife League member, be sure to check your PERKS list before heading out. Several of our fave restaurants have deals, giving members have lots of ways to save!

Babalu Tacos & Tapas

Babalu-Guacamole

The original Babalu, located in Fondren, has become a Jackson staple with its unique Southern-influenced take on Latin flavors. Their patio is always ready regardless of the weather, and the drinks are unique and downright enticing. Any trip to Babalu should start with their signature guacamole, prepared tableside. Wash it down with their signature Babarita or Pepe O’Malley cocktails. After that, the entire menu is really a treat. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. The Baba Burger is legendary in Jackson and their Pan Roasted Redfish adds some sizzle to a local fish favorite. Don’t forget about Babalu’s weekend brunch menu.

We recommend: The Braised Beef Short Ribs

Babalu is located at 622 Duling Avenue in the historic Fondren District of Jackson.

La Cazuela

La Cazuela is Belhaven’s neighborhood cantina. La Cazuela features one of Jackson’s largest patios, and it’s a fantastic place to bring the kids for a weeknight meal or to hang out and have a margarita while the world goes by. If you call ahead, their patio has plenty of room to host an entire baseball team or a large gathering of friends and coworkers. Their menu is standard Tex-Mex in a box fare with good portions and great prices.

We recommend: The Tacos Al Adobe

La Cazuela is located at 1401 E. Fortification Street in the Belhaven neighborhood near downtown Jackson.  You can reach them at 601.353.3014.

Papito’s

Papitos-Drinks

The Papito’s family of restaurants has made its presence felt throughout the greater Jackson metro with their friendly spin on a traditional Mexican restaurant menu. The restaurant is well done with traditional décor and signature dishes that make us think of Papito’s when we think about Mexican food in Mississippi.  This is a great place for the whole family and also provides a patio with ample space. The chips and salsa are made fresh on site, and it’s hard to not eat too many.

We recommend: The Papito’s Dip

Papito’s is located at 111 Colony Crossing Way 400 in Madison.

Jaco’s Tacos

Jacos-Burrito

Jaco’s Tacos has become one of downtown Jackson’s go-to hot spots. The menu is eclectic and truly gives us a Mississippi perspective on traditional Tex Mex. I can’t think of anywhere else in the area where you can get a Fried Chicken Taco. Keeping with the theme, their patio is the seating spot of choice at Jaco’s Tacos, and their signature Bloody Mary’s and Mimosas are a refreshing start to a weekend morning. Pair them with the Jaco’s Sunday brunch where you’ll find both Southern and Tex-Mex options. We go for the Breakfast Fajitas. For something different, try their Ahi Tuna Taco or the Baja Fish Tacos.

We recommend: The Mojave Pork Taco

Jaco’s Tacos is located at 318 N. State Street in downtown Jackson. Or check out their brand new location at 5657 Lakeland Dr. in Flowood.

Sombra Mexican Kitchen

Angus Fajitas Sombra Mexican Kitchen Ridgeland Flowood

Sombra isn’t just celebrating Cinco de Mayo for one day. They are celebrating all week long! Each day features a new food and drink special. Did you know they also have an entire menu dedicated to margaritas? Check out the Mississippi Margarita made with Cathead Honeysuckle vodka, agave nectar, and lime juice. Sombra also have a very extensive tequila offering. Since it’s never a good idea to drink tequila on an empty stomach, start off with a Kitchen Sampler, then try a dish from the Sombra favorites section of the menu, like the Black Bean and Goat Cheese Tamale or Masa Battered Shrimp.

We recommend: Cochinita Pibil

Sombra Mexican Kitchen now has two locations. Their original location in Ridgeland is located at 140 Township Avenue. They recently opened a second location in Flowood at 111 Market St.

El Sombrero

El Sombrero Jackson Mississippi

With locations all across the metro-area, El Sombrero has been a long-time family favorite. It’s hard not to fill up on the complimentary chips and salsa, but we urge you to save yourself for an order of Nachos Supremos. If you’re still hungry, El Sombrero has many reasonably-priced items to choose from. Get a little bit of everything with a combination dinner, or try one of their house specialties like Enchilada Tapatias. You’ll want to wash everything down with a cold Mexican brew or a frozen margarita.

We recommend: Chili Colorado

El Sombrero has locations in Pearl, Flowood and Byram. You’re sure to find one close by for lunch or dinner.

Las Terrazas

Las Terrasaz Gluckstadt Mississippi

Gluckstadt has been growing by leaps and bound lately. We were exited to discover the area’s first Mexican restaurant — Las Terrazas. On Cinco de Mayo, they will be serving up all your traditional Mexican favorites plus $3 margaritas, $5 sangria, and $4 Jose Cuervo. You can also enjoy live music out on the patio.  Start off with an order of Las Terrazas Dip, then check out their house specialties like the carnitas or fajita chimichanga.

We recommend: Molcajete

Las Terrazas is located at 134 Weisenberger Rd in Gluckstadt.

Green Ghost Tacos

Green Ghost Tacos Fondren Ridgeland Mississippi

We love that  Green Ghost Tacos prepares all the food from recipes passed down for generations from family back in Mexico. Everything is made fresh and you can definitely feel the TLC when you visit. As expected, there are LOTS of taco varieties to choose from. If you’ve having trouble deciding, try a flight of four, eight, or twelve tacos. Green Ghost Tacos in Fondren is also extending the fiesta across the entire week. Check out their Facebook events page of a list of food and drink specials for each day. They are also selling punch cards good for 5 drinks of your choosing from three options: margaritas, draft beer, or Palomas.

We recommend: Pastel Tres Leches

Green Ghost Tacos has two locations. Fondren is located at 2801 N State Street in Jackson. Their Ridgeland location is at 1290 E County Line Road.
