All this spring weather has us flush with excitement for patio dining season and new menu updates. Fondren, the artistic center of the city, leads the way this spring as one of the best dining destinations in the state right now, with inspiring flavors and second-to-none dining experiences. We’ve scoured the scene, and here are, in our opinion, the best bites in Fondren – right now.
Pimento Cheese Toast – Caet Wine Bar
If you’re from the South, pimento cheese toast doesn’t really sound like anything to mention in an article about of-the-moment best bites of food, but in the hands of Chef Derek Emerson and his Chef de Cuisine, Meredith Pittman, it becomes something transcendent. Thick toast with bacon jam (yep, BACON JAM) that seems otherworldly help this simple bite make our list. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s only $5.50 on their happy hour menu!
Pulled Pork Nachos – Pig and Pint
I love barbecue. It speaks to me. I don’t typically stray very far from a brisket that is as good as the Pig and Pint’s, but I’m so glad I was talked into this tasty treat. Corn chips that are topped with smoked poblano queso, beans, pickled red onions, jalapenos, their “sweet” bbq sauce and some of the best pulled pork in the city makes this something you have to try.
Cajun Fried Chicken Salad – Walker’s Drive In
I’m not usually much of a salad guy, but this isn’t an ordinary salad. If you’ve only eaten at Walker’s at night, I highly recommend that you make a point to go by for lunch. It may be the most surprising place to find one of Jackson’s best blue plates, but it’s hard for me not to get this tasty salad. Of course, it’s a well-known fact around these parts that Chef Derek Emerson knows how to fry chicken, but what really sets this dish apart is the scoop of cornbread dressing on top. Of a salad. Yes. And it’s not your normal dressing either. I can’t really think of a way to describe the moist consistency of it, so you’ll need to trust me and try it because it is amazing.
Gravy Fries – Saltine
I know what you’re thinking, Saltine is an oyster bar and mainly a seafood restaurant, but trust me on this. I don’t miss many meals, and I know a great gravy fry when I taste one. This is one. Fries topped with roast beef gravy, gruyere cheese and pickled chiles will test any man’s will power. If you really want to need a nap, get this as a side for the Saltine Burger.
Tacos De Patos – Babalu Tapas & Tacos
These are Babalu’s duck tacos, I wouldn’t feel good about myself if I didn’t tell everyone I know and love about these tacos. They consist of duck confit, avocado mousse, cotija cheese, and a lime vinaigrette. These flavors combined speak to my soul. So go to Babalu, get some guacamole made tableside, have a Babarita or a Pepe O’Malley, order these tacos, and thank me later.
