Wine Ahead: Santé South Sneak Peak #1

SanteSouth2013Greetings, foodies and oenophiles!  It is almost that time of year again when winemakers and vintners from the world over converge on Jackson for Santé South Wine & Food Festival!

No ordinary wine fest, Santé South allows festival goers to taste top-flight wines from all over the world and talk about them with the people who make them.  Right here on Eat Jackson, we will be giving you a sneak peek – previewing just a few of the nearly forty producers who will be showing off the fruit of their labors this April at Highland Village to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association Mississippi Chapter.

For starters, let’s take a look at one of California’s most celebrated producers of Zinfandel, Bob Biale.  Bob, his father Aldo, who first planted these vineyards in the 1930s, and childhood friend, Dave Pramuk started Robert Biale Vineyards in 1991.  In the time since then, this winery has received high acclaim and a near cult-like following for their zinfandel bottlings.

Biale makes several Zins, one from Aldo’s Vineyard, a 75 year old vineyard in Napa’s Oak Knoll District and the famous “Black Chicken” Zinfandel named for the code word used for his Father’s secret wines made in his youth which comes from their Biale Ranch vineyard.  They also produce some of the best Petite Sirah in California along with several excellent blends such as “Like Father, Like Son” and “Basic Black”.

Biale is known for producing hedonistic wines showing layers of dark fruit, exotic spices, and perfume with great balance and complexity.  The wines range from $42 – $54 dollars and you can taste them with Bob Biale at Santé South on April 13!
