BBQ Pizza at State Street Barbeque

What Happens When You Put BBQ and Pizza Together?

So let’s start with the stuff we know: Barbeque is good. Pizza is good.

With me so far? Good.

It stands to reason that if you combine two things that are good, the resulting product will be something even better. Well, it’s nice to know that in the crazy world we live in–where logic is far too often stood on its head–that reason still holds up every now and again. At State Street Barbeque, the BBQ pizza is…(you guessed it) really good.

I stopped by recently, and with the aid of a friend sampled both the pork and the chicken varieties of their BBQ pizza. If there’s one thing better than going out to eat with someone who loves trying new food as much as you do, it’s when she bases her order on what will help your story the most. Long live foodie friends!

There was nothing about these pizzas that was “off”; everything was spot-on. I like my pizzas to be generously laden with toppings, and this one was. The thin crusts of both pizzas were loaded down with meat and cheese (cheddar and mozzarella).

Both the pork and the chicken were tender, juicy, and had a wonderful flavor. My vote goes to the pork, but that’s simply based on my preference for pork when it comes to barbeque; the chicken was nothing to sneeze at. (Seriously, don’t sneeze while you’re eating barbeque, no matter how cool you think your Jackson Pollock-esque sauce-projectile creations are, you will endear yourselves to neither your fellow diners nor your server.)

Any barbeque lover knows that the sauce can make or break the experience. State Street’s sauce, which my friend nailed as “smoky, but sweet” was proportioned nicely. They didn’t skimp, yet the pizza wasn’t swimming in it, either. This is not a loud, in-your-face sauce; it complements the meat without overwhelming it.

The pizza had been baked just the right amount of time for the cheese on top to form a bit of a crust without losing its “gooey” factor.

At $7.99, the BBQ pizza is a steal. It’s served pre-sliced into four pieces, and it’s plenty of food to satisfy the average hungry diner. For $.50 each, you can add additional toppings (sliced jalapenos, diced tomatoes, onions, or bell peppers)

So the next time lunch rolls around and you feel like doubling up on your “good,” head on over to State Street Barbeque and ask for the BBQ pizza. And do it like I did: Take somebody with you who who will let you eat off her plate.

State Street BBQ is open daily 11 am until 10 pm. And when you show your EatJXN Card, you get 10% off of your order.

Definitely enjoyed the brisket at State Street and am loving having a downtown / belhaven BBQ restaurant.

For BBQ pizzas, I’d suggest another build-your-own style with bacon, sausage, sun dried tomatoes, and BBQ sauce. It is one of my favorite pizza combinations. Pizza Shack does it well.
