Kyoto in Ridgeland: Sushi, Hibachi, Steaks, Oh My!

Kyoto-ExteriorIt’s easy to miss Kyoto Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar in Ridgeland, at first. But once you find it, you’ll find yourself there frequently.

Nestled in the Village Square Place plaza on Old Canton, home to Kathryn’s and adjacent to Freshway Produce, Kyoto is conveniently located for anyone in Ridgeland or near the Reservoir, since it’s just south of the Lake Harbour intersection. When you walk inside, you’ll notice the classic hibachi-family-style atmosphere, with seats surrounding big, clean hibachi tables (with some additional seating up front or at the bar, if you’re just there for the sushi or steak).

Our appetizer - Tuna Tataki!

Our appetizer – Tuna Tataki!

The animated hibachi chefs make the delicious hibachi a great call, especially if you’re bringing the kids – but don’t overlook the extensive steak offerings (New York Strip Steak, Filet Mignon, Teppan Sukiyaki Beef…) or the fresh sushi and seafood fare.

Having dined at Kyoto several times now, we pretty much always start with the squid salad, a perfectly portioned helping of fresh squid with cucumber and just enough citrus tang. On this most recent visit, we also indulged in another appetizer, the Tuna Tataki – seared edges on the lovely sashimi-grade tuna.

Kyoto_RollComboOf course, on the sushi front, the roll quality matters, and the rolls at Kyoto are solid. Take note, though: several rolls here bear the same names as rolls at other local sushi joints, but contain different ingredients, so read carefully before making your selection! Some of our favorites include the Rock-N-Roll (tuna, salmon, yellowtail, avocado, crabstick – fresh, great combination of raw-fish flavors), the Olympic Roll (the same ingredients – but with tempura, adding a lovely crunch!), and the classic California Roll (avocado, cucumber, and crab stick). The Spicy Scallop Roll, with pink sauce and a nice kick, is also good. And then there’s the Rainbow Roll.

Kyoto-TempuraFriedIceCreamWe’ll be back soon to check in on the hibachi and the steak selection, but this sushi meets approval – dine-in, and take out (yep, we’ve done both recently).

And if you like finishing off your sushi with something a little sweet, may we recommend the tempura ice cream at Kyoto? Hot and cold, crisp and smooth, the perfect combination of flavors. Plus, since Kyoto is a new EatJXN card partner, you’ll get a dollar off this delish dessert.

Kyoto’s is office. We go there for lunch and it is very reasonably priced. The people who work there are great!

I love Kyoto! It was the very first place that I tried hibachi back in 2001, I think. I have never tried their sushi but definitely think it will probably be just as fantastic. Also, new to try the tempura ice cream. Yum! Can’t wait!

I went here once for a birthday, and they brought out the freshest, sliced pineapple ever for my birthday. Definitely different for a birthday dessert, but it was great! Not sure if they still do that or not now.

Seems like Kyoto is often overlooked, but I think it’s definitely the best hibachi in town. I like picking it up to-go so I can divide it half for dinner and half for lunch the next day. If I dine-in I’m likely to eat every bit of the delicious mountain of fried rice they put on the plate. 🙂
