Craving The Prime Rib at Kathryn’s Steakhouse

A few weeks ago, I was meeting some friends at Kathryn’s Steakhouse in Ridgeland. I wasn’t particularly hungry, but ordered an appetizer just to have something to snack on. Also because the food coming out of the kitchen smelled incredible, and I’m not made of stone. That night, I went with the Scampi Tomato – abroiled tomato stuffed with shrimp and scallops, smothered with a buttery wine sauce, cheddar, and feta. And it was great. But that’s not what this piece is about.

This is about a steak I sampled that night, which created a powerful steak craving in me.

See, while I was enjoying my appetizer, my friend’s order of Prime Rib came out. And it looked absolutely mouthwatering. Good friend that he is, my buddy offered me a bite after he noticed that I was intensely coveting his dinner.  And suddenly I was ravenous. After having a full dinner earlier, and a late night seafood snack, all it took was one bite of juicy prime rib to make me completely disregard the fact that I was full. I managed to restrain myself from beating him over the head with my chair and stealing his plate, but I vowed that I would soon return to get an order of my own.  That’s what this particular post is about.

Kathryns-PrimeRibThe Prime Rib at Kathryn’s comes in 12 oz. and 16 oz. entrees. I ordered the 12 oz., and was faced with a thick slab of beef so massive that the waiter had to reassure me that it was exactly what I ordered. You can, of course, specify how you would like it cooked, and mine was a perfect “Medium” – warm throughout, but still unmistakably pink and juicy. It’s served with an au jus for dipping, and a horseradish cream sauce upon request. I’m a recent convert to horseradish, and I say “request it.” The “cream sauce” nature of it means it’s not as powerful as straight up horseradish, but still gives it quite the kick.

Kathryns-LoadedMashedPotatoesYou’ve got an impressive selection of side dishes to choose from as well. I went with the Loaded Mashed Potatoes, packed with sour cream, bacon, chives, and enough butter to make you pledge your undying love to Kathryn, whoever she might be.  It’s nice that they have live music often, because once you finish off a steak dinner like that, with a fried dinner roll and a cold glass of Andygator… you’re not in much of a hurry to go anywhere for a while.

Whatever steak dinner you’re craving, Kathryn’s Steakhouse will have you covered, with a large selection of cuts. I guarantee you this, though: that Prime Rib is going to have a special spot in my heart for quite some time.
