A Fried Food Feast at Cock of the Walk

Cock of the Walk in Ridgeland, right on the Reservoir, is like no restaurant I’ve ever been to before. It is charming, old fashioned, without all the modern glamour. As we sat down to order, I stared blankly at the menu until it registered with me that there are only two options: Catfish or Chicken.

CockoftheWalk-CornbreadI grinned as I slowly took it all in. Catfish was the ultimate decision I reached. A Southern fried food feast was sure to follow.

In addition to our main course orders, we also had “greens,” which were wonderfully seasoned mustard greens, fried pickles and onion rings. To make it even more original, all of this is served in pots and pans, straight from the kitchen. Each pot has its own wooden spoon for a traditional “family style,” help-yourself-meal. Old fashioned all the way! We also got cornbread that was brought out hot in a black cast iron skillet. I loved the skillet cornbread, it instantly reminds you of your grandmother’s Sunday lunch after a morning at church in the South. A real family meal.

CockoftheWalk-LemonadeTinCupsThe second best part of the meal was the lemonade. It was served in old-timey tin cups, which made the cold lemonade even colder. Our entrée came out next, and instead of personal plates they brought all three servings of Fried Catfish, Hushpuppies, and Fries on one communal plate. Truly a feast, and can you say mouth-watering!

I was almost drooling as I heaped generous amounts of fish and fried goodies on my plate, already full of “greens.” The food met every expectation I had: it was fried to golden perfection. I love a good fried catfish—and this place knows how to do it right. As if that wasn’t enough, I made myself borderline sick from consuming mass amounts of hushpuppies.

The whole experience was so eclectic and the food/atmosphere combination left you begging for more and left us without a doubt that we would be back again, soon!

Cock of the Walk is truly one of Mississippi s gems. I am also in love with the food. By the way, don’t be fooled by the imitation ones in has stations. My cousin that works here says they are fake and stole the name!
