Pelican Cove Grill, Ridgeland’s tropical bar and grill, is located at 3999-A Harbor Walk Drive, Ridgeland on the Reservoir. It has the best views in the Metro.
The Pelican, while not new, but not old either, already has a loyal following. The feel and air of Pelican Cove Grill takes you away from the hustle and bustle of the Metro. It has the feel of a tropical location and it is captured well.
The Food. We tried the blue crab claws, coconut shrimp, gumbo, chicken tenders and sides. The crab claws came out first, hot and plenty of them with a side of cocktail sauce. They were good, but nothing special. The coconut shrimp were good. Large, butterflied shrimp fried golden in a crisp coconut flake breading. The shrimp were very good. However, they came with a dipping sauce of what I believe to be apple sauce, pineapple juice, coconut flake and red pepper. The sauce was weird and not an enhancement to the shrimp. Eat the shrimp; ditch the sauce.
The gumbo was very flavorful, rich and gumbo-y. The gumbo itself has a consistency almost gravy like, had chunks of sausage and was spiced right. The chicken tenders were not your typical tenders from most joints. They were larger and had a higher quality look, feel and taste. They needed some salt, which we added. Fries were fine, a little thicker than your usual fry, but good.
Bottom line: the food is a good variety of tasty bar food. But nothing super gourmet here.
The drinks were cold and a pretty good selection of bottled beer was available.
The Service. The service was friendly but slow. They did experience a large influx of patrons in a relatively short period of time, and it was one of the single most beautiful days in the history of Mississippi since becoming a state in 1817. (See, these stories can also be educational.) Perfect temperature, slight breeze and no humidity made the wait pleasant. The view of the reservoir and the peaceful and tranquil setting are hard to beat. However, had it been the weather of two weeks ago, there would have been some grumbling.
The Game. Pelican Cove Grill had at least 3 TV’s outside tuned to the Saints game. They also had live music during the game. It was Acoustic Diesel 255, who was fantastic, by the way. You should check them out as they will be there regularly, but if you went to watch the game and hear the commentators, it wasn’t going to happen. But who does that anyway? The crowd was big and very casual; several patrons arrived in boats and swimming trunks. No shoes, no shirt, no problem.
