After an exceptional lunch at The Copper Iris Catering Company, Inc. in downtown Jackson just a few weeks ago, I was itching to get back and try their supper. Since it is only served on Thursday and Friday nights, and since I wanted to eat there during Jackson Restaurant Week, last night was the first chance I got to go!
I rounded up a friend of mine to join me, who was also interested in seeing what they were all about. We arrived around 7:30 to a fairly small crowd and were seated by Jonathan, the owner.
We’d both already decided what we were going to order, since The Copper Iris Jackson Restaurant Week Menu was online, so we were ready before he even handed us our menus! That’s one of the many great things about Jackson Restaurant Week!
I went with the BBQ Pork Quesadillas as my appetizer, the Crab Stuffed Pork Tenderloin as my entrée, and the Key Lime Pie for dessert. My compadre went for the Black Bean Hummus, Crab Cakes, and Key Lime Pie as well.
The whole meal was worth talking about, but I want to focus attention on the two dishes that completely stole the show! Those two things were our two appetizers…
The BBQ Pork Quesadillas
The BBQ Pork Quesadillas from The Copper Iris were absolutely jaw-dropping. The half-order came out piping hot, fresh off the griddle, and smelled amazing. Four slices of quesadilla and some BBQ sauce on the side for dipping made quite an impressive display. My first bite of sauce-dipped quesadilla was one of the most memorable moments I’ve had to date with Eat Jackson. I can’t say this word enough: FRESH.
This appetizer had just been prepared, that was easy to tell. The pork was tender and terrific. (I remember Jonathan telling me on my first visit that they prepare the pork in their own kitchen in a very unique way.) The little bit of cheese mixed in held the meat and tortilla together nicely, and the BBQ dipping sauce was a great compliment. After taking a few bites, my friend agreed that this dish was one of the best appetizers she’s had in ages… WOW.
The Black Bean Hummus
The other appetizer we ordered on this visit was almost equally as impressive. The half order of Black Bean Hummus was generous and quite attractive! The swirl of purple-gray creaminess in the middle of the plate was outlined by several small crispy crostini. I could tell by the look on my friend’s face that this was something I needed to try. I got a smear of the hummus on a small piece of bread, took a bite, and realized a few things:
1) I’m not sure I’ve ever had Black Bean Hummus.
2) I probably just got spoiled on Black Bean Hummus because I don’t see how any other Black Bean Hummus could be any better.
3) I am now a huge fan of Black Bean Hummus.
Not only was the hummus itself good, but the crostini was way better than most! It was dressed up with butter and parmesan cheese, adding another dimension of flavor to each bite we took of this dish. It. Was. Incredible.
I recommend you go to The Copper Iris for supper the next available Thursday or Friday evening you have free! Not only do they have good food (particularly great appetizers), but they’ll let you brown bag!
Come back and let us know how you liked your visit to The Copper Iris (which is officially named “The Copper Iris Catering Company, Inc.” because… you guessed it, if you can’t get to their tiny downtown location – they will cater!).
FOOD: I haven’t had anything here yet that I did not enjoy. They’ve got a very diverse menu, so there’s something here for everybody.
ATMOSPHERE: This is one of the best parts of The Copper Iris! The smallish space is in an old building, but updated. The walls and floors seem to be original to the structure, but they’ve cleaned it up. Exposed brick, good lighting, a great view of State Street from the big windows that span the storefront… Easy place to get comfortable!
SERVICE: Jonathan, the owner, was also our server. He kept drinks full and made sure everything we ate was up to standard. Since The Copper Iris is so small, everything is made to order. The only downside to that is that your meal may take a little while. But I recommend going on a relaxing Thursday or Friday night when you have nothing else going on, and just enjoy that bottle of wine you brown bagged in with you.
