Everyone knows you can’t have a good ol’ genu-ine Southern, rib-stickin meal without a proper side of bread.
Acceptable forms of “side of bread” are many: cornbread, buttered toast, rolls… Those all work. Those are all well and good. But if you want what we think should be the definition of the perfect Southern “side of bread,” then head to Two Sisters Kitchen.
The folks at Two Sisters Kitchen in downtown Jackson know what they’re doing when it comes to fixin’ up soul food. Particularly the bread part. Their biscuits, which are commonly referred to as Angel Biscuits, are what carb-lovers’ dreams are made of. (And lets be honest. Aren’t we all carb lovers?)
Diann says…
We caught up with Diann, one of the two sisters that the restaurant is named after, to get a little more information about these heavenly Angel Biscuits.
“Why are they called Angel Biscuits?” we asked.
“My Grandmother Glaze called them Angel Biscuits, and I got the recipe from her,” Diann says. We think it must be because the dough, made with white flour, looks like clouds that angels lay on…. Hey, it’s a distinct possibility…
We learned that these beauties are house made by the multi-dozen every single day, using (of course) Mrs. Glaze’s family recipe. Because they fly off the buffet so fast, Diann says they are definitely one of the most popular items she serves. (We would like to argue that they are THE most popular item. Well, that and the Fried Chicken. Oh, and the Bread Pudding… Ok maybe they are one of the most popular items…)
“What is the funniest thing you’ve ever heard someone say about Angel Biscuits?”
Diann’s Answer: “Good thing my mama is not here.” Why’s that? “These darn things are so good I would have to slap her… And she would slap me back!” Lucky for that person, his mama was nowhere to be found… And lucky for Diann, she didn’t have to send anybody to the hospital over her Angel Biscuits!
As you may remember from the Bread Pudding Throwdown, the Bread Pudding from Two Sisters is pretty legit as runner-up in the “Most Like Grandma’s Category.”
When we asked Diann what else she wanted us to know about these biscuits, she reminded us of this: “We make our AWESOME, award-winning - Southern Living picked us in the Top 20 of the Millennium – Bread Pudding from these delicate morsels!”
Now, if that’s not an award to be proud of, we don’t know what is!
If you haven’t gotten a chance to try these beautiful biscuits, then now’s the time! Two Sisters is open weekdays for lunch from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Tell them Eat Jackson sent you!
