After a fun yet intense night of tasting Bread Pudding from all over the Jackson area at the first ever Eat Jackson’s Bread Pudding Throwdown, the official judges (was that you?) named The Parker House in Ridgeland as home to the Overall Best Bread Pudding in Jackson.
Chef Andy Cook says this dessert staple was already on the menu when he took over the restaurant several years ago, but after making some tweaks and improving the already popular recipe, the beautiful, award-winning Bread Pudding was born.
We must admit, the White Chocolate and Cranberry Bread Pudding from The Parker House has been one of our favorites for a while now… It is hard to beat the cranberry element that adds that small amount of tartness to the otherwise perfectly sweet dish. The bread used in Parker House’s recipe is Leidenheimer’s French Bread from New Orleans – used for its light and airy texture, and we think it’s perfect! If you missed Eat Jackson’s Bread Pudding Throwdown and have not tried this Bread Pudding on any other occasion, we recommend getting up to The Parker House AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. It is a regular menu item, so you can order it any night that they’re open! (Tuesday through Saturday, 5 p.m. – 10 p.m.)
We caught up with Chef Andy (@chefandycook on Twitter) to talk with him about the aftermath of his win. He says guests are coming in to the restaurant saying things like: “We were at the Throwdown but wanted to eat the winning Bread Pudding in your actual restaurant” or “We heard from friends that your Bread Pudding won Best in Jackson, so we had to come try it out.”
Isn’t Word of Mouth the Greatest?
Andy did say they’re beefing up their batches of Bread Pudding every night since the demand has increased. He says they had a table of seven come in the weekend after the throwdown solely because they’d heard of the big win. We feel confident they were impressed by more than just the last course!
Old Capitol Inn’s Bread Pudding was a winner, too!
The runner-up to the Best Bread Pudding in Jackson is also a winner in our hearts: Jackie’s Recipe at Old Capitol Inn. Hers was Hazelnut Praline and Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding topped with a Golden Frangelico Chantilly Sauce. Just reading the description makes us hungry for it! Jackie’s Bread Pudding is available during lunch in the Sun Room at Old Capitol Inn, so you can order this winner as well!
