What's the Secret to Making it Grandma's Way?

JoAnn and her Bread Pudding at Primos

There are few things in life better than Grandma’s cookin’. Even if Junior doesn’t like spinach, you know he’ll eat (and like) the Spinach Casserole his grandmother makes. Grandmas everywhere are as talented in the kitchen as seasoned lawyers are in the courtroom, and nothing warms a grandmother’s heart more than to see her grandkids clean their plates.

Yes, Grandma’s food is always special, always delicious, and almost unbeatable.

The Bread Pudding at Primos

For the aforementioned reasons, the “Most Like Grandma’s” prize at the Bread Pudding Throwdown, held on January 18th, was one that held almost as much merit as the “Overall Best” prize. Primos Café and Bake Shop was the restaurant that proudly walked away with this coveted award! In the past, this Bread Pudding was only available as a special every week or two, but after the success of this delightful recipe at Eat Jackson’s Bread Pudding Throwdown, Primos has decided to serve it three days a week throughout the month of February! We consider ourselves lucky to have such access to this dessert, as should you!

JoAnn, Bread Pudding maker extraordinaire, is excited that her handiwork did so well at the Throwdown. So excited, in fact, that you can sometimes catch her wearing her Bread Pudding Throwdown apron around the Primos kitchen! When we asked Mary Claire Primos what makes their bread pudding so good, she said, “It’s so moist and simple! It has tons of flavor, just like bread pudding should. And the bread we use in it is great!” When we asked if they’ve seen more orders for this dessert since the win, Mary Claire said, “Yes, people have been coming in asking for it. We run out most every day!”

Be sure to visit either location (Lake Harbour or Lakeland) of Primos Cafe on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday for lunch or dinner if you want a chance to try this stuff! Just one bite of this Bread Pudding will take you back in time. The classic spices and simple goodness of this dessert really do remind us (and apparently lots of other Jacksonians) of their Grandmother’s homemade Bread Pudding from days of yore. But don’t wait too late in the day to go get some! They’ve been running out every time it’s on the menu… Sounds like quite the hot commodity!

On the topic of Bread Pudding that reminds us of Grandma’s…

The second prize winner in the “Most Like Grandma’s” category was Two Sisters Kitchen. This Bread Pudding has been a local favorite for years and, as evidenced by this award, will continue to win awards because it’s just that good. They recycle their famous Angel Biscuits and use them as the body of the dessert. And the Whiskey Sauce used as the topping… WOW! If you didn’t try this at the Throwdown, you need to go have lunch at Two Sisters and save room for Bread Pudding!
