Our Patty Peck Honda Take Out of the Week comes from a little place in the Fondren district of Jackson that you may’ve heard of: the famed Sal and Mookie’s New York Pizza & Ice Cream Joint!
When in the mood for some comfort food… or, em, great football watching food… this pizza joint is a natural choice for pizza…and so much more.
I recommend when calling in a take out order that you ask about their “pizza of the day” options…because they do have such options on a daily basis – always a “red” aka tomato sauce based, a “white” or a cream sauce based and a vegetarian option for those who like “healthy” pizza. When I asked about their pizza of the day, the “white slice” of the day was a ricotta, mozzarella and fontina cheese base with Italian sausage, caramelized onions, and sauteed spinach. Any day of the week, you can find this flavor-fest on the menu as the “Gambino” specialty pizza.
I was ordering lunch, so I got a single “white slice” of the Gambino pizza along with a side salad (an amazing and hearty salad that comes standard with the lunch special).
I asked my order-taker “some sort of vinaigrette” salad dressing, and she replied, “Ok, I’ll put my favorite kind in there for you. I think you’ll like it. Most people do!”
Well that was easy! I loved her confidence. (Whoever you were that took my order that day, you were so kind and helpful!)
When she told me my food would be ready in 15 minutes, I thanked her and almost hung up. Then I realized…
“WAIT!!! So sorry to yell in your ear! But I completely forgot to order a side of hummus!”
She so sweetly answered with an “Oh that’s okay! Happens all the time!” attitude. On the second try, I was able to hang up without bursting anymore eardrums. With my lunch order placed, I put my pedal to the metal on a warpath to Fondren for that slice of Gambino pizza and that hummus.
The Gambino Pizza
Sal & Mookie’s is setup for take-out, so doing just that is a breeze. Whisk into the lounge area, grab your bag, pay and you’re out the door again. No hassle take-out is what this place provides! I went in, paid, and got my bag of food without a hitch. My car quickly filled with the scrumptious smells of Sal & Mookie’s New York style pizza. When I opened the take-out box, the slice of pizza was so big that it almost didn’t fit in the box. This was no skimpy slice… It was large and loaded with toppings. The hearty New York style crust almost couldn’t support the pile of goods piled on top of it! I took a bite and was taken straight to my happy place. Not only am I a major fan of cheese, but I also have a thing for spinach and onions. The caramelized onions with the cheese blend, spinach, and Italian sausage were up to par! My only wish is that this had been a bit less greasy. I had to wipe my fingers with a napkin after each bite. But I hear that this is a result of the full-flavored, high quality cheeses that they use at Sal & Mookie’s… so the trade-off for quality ingredients is WELL WORTH IT!
The side salad was crisp and fresh, topped with croutons, an onion slice, a tomato slice, and an olive. The surprise vinaigrette was tangy and delightful. I’m almost certain it was their Italian Vinaigrette!
A little known gem… the hummus!
As for the Sal and Mookie’s sleeper dish… The hummus was as good as it ever has been. This is still some of my favorite hummus of all times! The smooth and creamy chickpea spread with a little squeeze of lemon mixed in is to die for… What makes it even better are the warm fresh pita slices that come on the side. These extra large and crispy slices are heavily seasoned with garlic and herbs, and when dipped in the hummus make a flavor-packed bite complete with the perfect texture sensation. Note: This appetizer is large enough to share – or to enjoy as a meal if you’re solo.

LOVE the gambino pizza… It is my all time favorite dish at Sal and Mookies! I haven’t tried the hummus yet so I would be extremely happy to win the appetizer.
