The Best Part of Lumpkin’s Take Out

When a Lumpkin’s BBQ craving strikes, one has no choice but to make the drive. So I did. This beloved Bar-B-Que eatery on Raymond Road in South Jackson is full of soulful nourishment.

Let me pause to say that if you’ve never been to Lumpkin’s, you are completely missing out. This place is a fried chicken diamond in the KFC rough.  If you have been to Lumpkin’s, on the other hand, you know it is well worth the drive, no matter the distance.

Lumpkin's Buffet

The Spread

I walked in and was cheerfully greeted by Monique, the owner, a beautiful and bubbly and generous pixie of a human being. (Love her.)

Then I walked through the door to the buffet area to fix an early Christmas present for myself.

I grabbed a take out box, and I loaded it down with mashed yams, green beans, mac and cheese, cornbread, a couple of fried chicken legs, some of Lumpkin’s famous smoked beef brisket, and some peach cobbler (the latter two of which are cut and scooped by Melvin, husband of Monique and chief BBQ expert at this joint.)

With soul food aromas filling my car, me and my take-out box headed to my post-lunch appointment. Lucky for me, the route has a LOT of traffic lights, so I was able to eat the piping hot fare along my drive. First stop light, a few bites of cornbread. (Why have I never paid attention to how perfectly sweet their cornbread is?) Next stop, some fork fulls of macaroni and cheese. (This stuff could change your life.) Third stop light, some yams and fried chicken… This meal got better and better aaaand better… Finally I made it to my destination and was able to really concentrate on getting more than a bite or two at a red light. My whole take out box was filled with food prepared with nothing but happiness and love. I could taste it!!

Buffet Take Away!

Lumpkin’s has arguably some of the best fried chicken in the state, and their brisket is so tender that Elvis, if he could taste it, would probably write a song about it. All of their sides are pretty rocking, but I must highlight the unique deliciousness of their homemade mac and cheese.  The cheese in this stuff isn’t runny at all, but very real and just insanely good. Lastly, their peach cobbler is not to be missed! Juicy peaches, some cinnamon and spices, and the soft crust meld to create a dessert worthy of some really good award.

Dine In or Take-Out Worthy BBQ & Soul Food…

Lumpkin’s is great for dine in or for take out, so even if you don’t have much time, you need to go get lunch from Lumpkin’s one day soon so you can enjoy all the flavors that I got to on this visit!
