Eating Our Way Through Starkville, Part II

Catfish Hushpuppies

The Catfish Hushpuppies from Restaurant Tyler... WOW....

Let’s continue with our Starkville Food Tour with another Ty Thames restaurant, shall we?

Restaurant Tyler

After eating the Carne Pizza from Bin 612, which was one of the best I’ve had in recent history (See Part I), it was time to head back to Restaurant Tyler to try the Smoked Catfish Hushpuppies and the Stuffed Pancakes that Chef Ty Thames had encouraged to try. So, while still a bit full from the pizza, I somehow found the will to power through that fullness to see what these two dishes were all about!

Catfish Hushpuppies

When my two plates arrived, I dove into the Catfish Hushpuppies first, and DANG. I almost can’t describe how good they were. My best shot is to share the description from the menu: “in-house smoked Delta catfish combined with herbs, spices and cream cheese. Fried and served with house tartar sauce.” Simmer on that for a few minutes.

(Stuffed) Pancakes…for dessert!

Stuffed Pancake from Restaurant Tyler

Stuffed Pancake from Restaurant Tyler... This tasted even better than it looks!

Restaurant Tyler’s Stuffed Pancakes were equally spectacular. Described on the menu as “stuffed with maple glazed pecan cheesecake filling and served with Vermont maple syrup custard sauce.” My pancakes also came drizzled with some strawberry sauce and chopped pecans. This might be one of the finest desserts I’ve had in quite a while. The cheesecake filling on the inside was some kind of serious.

The Restaurant Tyler Duck Burger

As I was winding down this tasting, Ty dropped by my table… and mentioned the Restaurant Tyler Duck Burger.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t squeeze another morsel of food into my body, so we grabbed a Duck Burger to go… maybe a midnight snack? (Oh, the stresses of my job…. Too much good food; too little time!)

Duck Burger

The Duck Burger

When I ate the Duck Burger, it was good. I can only imagine how much better it would have been “hot and fresh out the kitchen,” as R. Kelly might say…

The Duck Burger had a meat patty of ground duck, topped with housemade foie gras cheese (yes, you read that right – and it was delish), all served on a ciabatta bun. Spring mix greens and tomato rounded out this juicy burger.

I have to tell you – this burger is different and outside of the box. And I LOVED IT! Next time, I will try it fresh, though!

A special thanks to Chef Ty Thames for helping us have such an amazing start to our Starkville Food Tour!

Next up: Oby’s, The Veranda, City Bagel, and Strange Brew….
