Hot Dog House – Flowood

Chicago Dog from the Hot Dog House

I first heard about Hot Dog House in Flowood via twitter. I figured they must be new, since they were just getting on twitter. I was wrong by about 5 months… Tweeting with owner Ben McCain I decided I better come by and check out the dogs for myself so we did. I needed to have lunch with a buddy of mine so we met up in Flowood. Now usually when I think of Flowood, I think of speed traps right across the bridge inside Rankin County. This, however, was further out, near the Castlewoods subdivision turn off of Highway 25 (Lakeland). It’s a little hidden, but it’s near the Mazzio’s out that way… Google it, you’ll find them.

Mississippi Dog

So why am I telling you where they are? Well it’s because it’s one of those places I think everyone should visit. It’s not fancy (nor should it be, as he’s selling hot dogs, not bone-in filet.) It’s a simple menu with some great choices.

For our visit we opted for the Texan, The Mississippian and then a Chicago dog. I had the Texan, Will, my trusty photographer, had the Mississippian and we split the Chicago Dog.  Hope I don’t sound like a Yankee, but I think the Chicago dog was the most tantalizing and original of the three. It featured Tomatoes, Cucumber, Pickle, Celery Salt a Pepper and Mustard. Sure you can’t go wrong with jalapenos, chili or sauerkraut – but this mixture was pretty well blended and was our favorite. I think it worked well together.

Texas dog packs a little heat!

Ben McCain owner of Hot Dog House

When you go, you’ll meet Ben, the owner. This is his baby now, and he loves his dogs. They serve a Nathan’s Famous hot dog and he steams them instead of grilling them so they don’t dry out. They come with an old school side of Ruffles potato chips. Having been to NYC and other metropolis-sized towns, this place reminds me of the old school hot dog stand on a street corner…it’s just tucked away in the shopping center. I’d love to see Ben out and about one day with a mobile version because those dogs were pretty darn good. Matter of fact, they reminded me of what I got in Boston outside of Fenway Park… no bull, just a hot dog. Oh, Ben’s also a musician, so ask him about that organ in the corner… you might can convince him to entertain you for a bit as well.

oooo! Sounds yummy! I’ll have to check it out when I’m out that way.

Did he say what kind of franks he uses? All beef, no fillers? Kosher? Just wondering ’cause I tasted my first all beef no filler high end frank last week and it was a huge difference in taste from the standard ball park frank, so just wondering what he uses, lol.
