If you are reading this right before lunch, I’m sorry… I probably made you even more hungry. But regardless, you will thank me once you read this one. I’ve been to Brent’s a number of times and I can’t help but call Brent’s one of Jackson/Fondren’s best places to eat. It’s a classic soda fountain that is still doing things the same way they have for years and there’s plenty to love about the food and the atmosphere.
When Brad Reeves bought the place, he wanted to keep it the same yet add to it. This past weekend they started serving a hot breakfast in Fondren. While I haven’t had the breakfast personally, I’ve heard some fantastic reviews from our followers on Twitter.
So what makes Brent’s Drugs such a special place? Partly the history, and partly the unchanged feel of the restaurant. They have updated their kitchen to accommodate the larger seating area, and although service has been spotty at times it seems to be on the upswing in a big way. It’s even been featured in the upcoming movie called “The Help.” We took a few photos of the filming in front of Brent’s. It’s also generational place. I can’t decide who seems happier to be there – the grandparents or grandkids that are there each time I visit. I even visited with a Doctor who said he’s had lunch there every week for over 20 years. There aren’t many places in town that boast that sort of loyalty.
If you like lemonade, you’ll love Brent’s hand made lemonade, and their malts, shakes, and floats are all hand made to order.
Food: I ordered the Brent’s Cheese Burger (you can get a double, but I opted for the single). Their burgers are fantastic and juicy, and come with a healthy side of Lay’s Chips. Ok, that may be a oxymoron but they do go great with the burger. A strawberry milkshake wraps up any good burger. Theirs are made with hand scooped ice cream right while you watch. More on that part later.
Atmosphere: The walls are adorned with memorabilia like a poster of Richard Nixon from his campaign. There’s even a case with old pharmaceutical stuff. I don’t know what all of it is, but it’s old and it’s cool. If you have kids it will quickly become one of their favorite places. It’s almost theater for them. Mine love to sit at the bar and watch the drinks and shakes crafted. The employees seem to know that’s part of the deal, and have always had a tremendous amount of patience and enjoy being part of the show.
Service: Service has been something we’ve seen evolve at Brent’s. One of the cool things about the place is the order form that doubles as a menu. You pick what you want, and hand it in to the server. If you weren’t aware that’s what was supposed to happen, you might sit a little longer waiting on someone to come take your order. I’ve been told that there are a few more tweaks on service, possibly table service coming soon. I’ve had pretty reasonable service most of the time, and it’s improved each of the last few times I’ve been there.
