Mimi’s Family & Friends in Fondren

Crawfish and Corn Chowder

Crawfish & Corn Chowder

Today I stopped by what will likely become a regular spot on my eating rounds. It’s called Mimi’s Family & Friends. I heard about it via facebook and I’m confident they’ll do well.  When you walk in you’ll be at the front counter where you’ll make a selection off a small, but varied menu. You’ll be greeted by “Mimi” if you lucky like I was.

I had a hard time deciding what to go with, but decided on a Smoked Catfish Po-Boy. The sandwich came on New Orleans white Po-boy bread and it reminded me of bread I’d eaten on the coast. I liked the catfish, (served cold) but could probably have eaten it warm and it might have gone with the sauce a little better. Exceptionally good flavor in the catfish.  I was also able to try the Pimento Cheese (Mimi’s family recipe) and it was fantastic. I’ll definitely try that next time along with the crawfish corn chowder… I think the corn chowder was my favorite dish of the day. It was flavorful, but not too spicy. Mimi told me she’s spent plenty of time on the coast, and this was reminiscent of food that I’ve been served down that way.

My final treat was the pecan pie. Jim makes these from scratch using brown sugar, not white. It had a rich flavor that I don’t recall having in just any pecan pie I’ve ever had.

All in all, I think you will probably really like Mimi’s. It’s not a fancy. It’s simple. It’s down home, with really great people serving and preparing the food. Jim said their menu was still being developed and that we’ll see more additions and revisions as it gets started.

Final thoughts for you.

Food: I loved the simple menu offerings. They were trying to hit on some major food groups that I think aren’t done enough. A Catfish Po-boy isn’t something you find everywhere in town. I liked the food, and will try other entrees next time I’m in. There WILL be a next time.

Service: I loved the service, but if they got really busy, it might take a while to get food. Bad service can ruin good food, this was great service. I got several refills, and they were always quick to deliver them.

Atmosphere: Overall the atmosphere is good. There’s an art gallery on the walls, which means that it will change as the pieces of art sell and are replaced. The outdoor seating was a plus. It had a very mom & pop feel to it, and I think that’s what the Burwell’s intended. After all, it is a mom & pop operation.

Final Thoughts. I will have to try the breakfast menu in the next week or so. It had cheese grits, eggs, biscuits and more on there. I’m a fan of all of the above. Signage could be much more visible, & with a high traffic area like that, they might get missed if they don’t put a larger, or more visible sign out for the public. I certainly was able to find it, but if the parking lot is full, I don’t think you’d be able to see the sign that caught my eye.

Great job guys, and I’ll see you again soon.
