A Real Find in Florence: Laid Back Burger Shack

For most folks, when you think “incredible food,” Florence, Mississippi is probably not the first place that comes to mind. However, if you pay attention, you’ll find food in Florence that will make you want to slap your momma. Especially if you’re craving burgers.

Where do you find these burgers? Well, you’ve probably seen the igloo, AKA Jerry’s Fish House. (It’s hard to miss!) Well, the igloo is right by Cooper’s Country Meat Packers, one of our area’s premiere meat butchery shops. It was there at the butchery that I’d scheduled a friend to meet for lunch. I was disappointed to find that they stopped serving lunch, focusing on their regular butcher shop products only. But they sent me to a place called “Laid Back Burger Shack,” located a mere block off of Highway 49.

LaidBackBurgerWhen a butcher is telling you about a burger, you listen. We did. Good thing, too.

Laid Back Burger Shack is just that. Laid back, yes. Burgers, yes. Shack, yes. Nothing fancy to see here. It’s a simple red building, and the seating area has just a handful of tables. I ordered the Bacon Cheddar Burger, resisting the temptation to order the one that originally caught my eye, the Fiery Jalapeño Burger.  But on the recommendation of my butcher buddy, I did get the Jalapeño Mayo on mine. What followed was the freshest combination of ingredients on a bun I think I have seen in months. The tomato slice was actually deep red. I am sick of the pink slimy things you see on plates that are supposed to be tomatoes – THIS was a REAL tomato, and I was thrilled to see it there. Fresh, just like the burgers themselves, which are hand-made and not pre-frozen.

Possibly the highlight of the burger was the Jalapeño Mayo. It had a very balanced heat that wasn’t overpowering but didn’t lack in flavor. Like I said – when a butcher is giving you advice about a meal, you take that advice.

Food: Excellent

Atmosphere: A classic dive. Probably 6 or so tables. Nothing fancy! I strongly suspect that this place will be around for years and years to come.

Service: The owner and our server were both mighty helpful. Service was quick for us, but might not always be the case – I did see a sign saying “all our food is fresh and it may take 15 minutes to make your food.”

Have you tried Laid Back Burger Shack? What did you think?

They have really great prices on all of their food. Check out their Facebook page for a menu. My only complaint is that their burgers have a LOT of worcestershire sauce on them.

I use to work in Richland and ate at Laid Back Burger Shack several times. It may not look like much but their food speaks for itself. They crawfish is also really good when in season. I give this burger a 8.75/10 though. Its pretty amazing. Good find eat-jackson.

I am a former employee of LBBS. I loved the job so much. The people and food were awesome. I am now at Culinary School in Dallas. We always used the freshest ingredients possible and everything is fresh made to order. Stephen, they actually don’t use Worcestershire sauce unless made by request.
